AEMC changes for exempt retailers

Written by Mike Thorne | 27 May 2019 4:21:11 AM

Currently over 3,000 embedded electricity operators are registered as exempt across the National Electricity Market (NEM). However as this number does not include smaller embedded networks deemed to be exempt, the total number of embedded networks is likely to be much greater.

The AEMC is currently in the process of a review of these embedded networks and the protections and choice available to customers within them.

In short, they are proposing to severely limit the number of exceptions and create a new "of-market" type of retailer. This off-market retailer will have many of the same requirements as a full retailer including the majority of the customer protection and invoice requirements.

Existing embedded networks will then be transitioned over to one of the off-market retailers over a period of time.
